Stellenzicht – the home of exceptional wine with a unique story

Posted on 15 July 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

Nestled amidst the fynbos and wild grasses, a sleek and curvy pod extends into an expansive deck with breathtaking views of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains.

This secluded paradise provides the ideal setting to immerse yourself in nature as you relax on comfortable couches or cane chairs for an afternoon of wine-tasting and wood-fired pizza indulgence.

Sustainability, treading lightly and the pursuit of balance is the key to the Stellenzicht wine philosophy: farming regeneratively, working with the terroir, and welcoming the dragonflies back onto their piece of mountainside paradise outside Stellenbosch.

The eco-friendly Wine Pod sits equally lightly on the land. Without needing a concrete slab, it is perched on crow’s feet, meaning it can easily be moved. It also fits seamlessly into the natural landscape. 80% of the Wine Pod’s materials are recyclable, and naturally create insulation in the colder months. Thus, less energy is used to create heat!

Stellenzicht’s winemaker L’Re Hughes preserves the land’s voice and ancient soils through collaboration with viticulturist Nico Nortje. True focus lies on the region’s famous varietals – Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault – offering three distinct ranges for tasting.

Here’s what L’Ré has to say about sustainable farming at Stellenzicht;

’For us it was a no-brainer to focus on sustainable efforts from the get-go. We had this golden opportunity from our revival in 2017 to do it right from day one. As a young production team, we are very aware of the legacy we are leaving behind, not just as a brand but as human beings. It was really important for us to see what we can give back, farming in equilibrium with mother nature and finding balance’.

‘This word really stood out for us from the beginning: balance. It’s not necessarily that there’s a constant goal but that the goal posts move as you grow and improve. So as long as we have a reachable goal with sustainability, we’re headed in the right direction.

It’s all about being humble enough to make mistakes in this endeavor and to learn from them…learning from others that have walked the path before us and seeing how we can learn from them.

‘Also, as farmers, there is a pride in knowing that we are creating a product of great quality and at the same time, we’re giving back to the land we farm from. That’s the difference between sustainable farming and regenerative farming. Sustainability is farming in a way as not to aggravate your natural resources into dilapidation. Regenerative farming is about creating more than what you started with, making nature healthier than before,’ added the winemaker.

If you are looking for exceptional wine with a truly unique story drenched in rich history and heritage, then you should definitely visit the Stellenzicht Wine Pod. You won’t be disappointed!
