Tested: K-Way Basecamp three-person tent

A mean green camping machine – this three person K-Way Basecamp tent is cleverly designed and fit for South African elements.

First off, I’ve got to comment on the bag design. The roll-down clasp means there’s plenty of room and you don’t have to pack up your tent neatly if you’re in a rush -just unpack it at home and sort it out post-camping trip. The total weight of the tent is roughly 4,5kg, which is incredibly lightweight and easy to carry around, although you do get lighter options to throw into your backpack for long hikes.

The K-Way Basecamp three person tent is easy to put up if you’ve got a partner to help you. The poles are colour coded to the tent and have magnetic joints so they snap into place. The aerodynamic-looking tent has a crisscross design for better defence against wind and once fastened to the ground with pegs it ain’t going anywhere.

The inner tent isn’t made of your average mesh – the fabric is a little thicker which means air doesn’t circulate as well, but there are small air pocket zippers at the top of the tent which is a clever feature. The tent is a  great length at 2,4 metres long so tall people won’t have their feet sticking out. The tent claims the size is right for three people, but it’s better suited to two people who can then keep gear at their feet.

One of my favourite elements of the tent (and K-Way tents in general) is the small ‘porch’ afforded by the design of the front zipper. The slanted angle leaves room to put on your shoes in the morning or take small shelter from rain or stash luggage in good weather leaving the tent a little roomier. The ceiling is quite low and you need to crouch to get in and out, which means you cant stand up to change inside.

The heavy duty material, hardy riptsop nylon is quality fabric that will stand decades of use. If you are rough putting poles through the fabric tubes on other tents, it’s likely to rip right through, which won’t happen with this beauty.

It’s quite pricey for a small tent, but you can feel the technical material is strong, durable and of high quality. If you’re a couple who loves camping, or need to keep the kids under reliable shelter the K-Way Basecamp three-person tent worth investing in.
