Five of the craziest sleeping bags

Posted on 10 May 2013

With winter coming there is no possibility of sleeping outdoors without a warm sleeping bag. If you’re sick of having a boring one, try one of these unconventional sleeping bags.

The bear bag

This has to be my favourite one. It looks incredibly cosy and it’s definitely a camp site talking point.

It was designed by by Eiko Ishizawa and looks like it can cocoon your whole body.

The Japanese walkable sleeping bag

If you hate getting out of bed, this is a sleeping bag for you.

Obviously, armholes weren’t high on the designer’s list.

Cocoon hanging sleeping bag

This sleeping bag is more of a glorified and insulated hammock. It’s awesome. Designed by John Moriarty and Billy Harney they conceptualised the cocoon around the idea of an emergency shelter. It’s an insulated sleeping bag that users could hang from trees and will definitely offer up a new way of sleeping outdoors.

Shark attach sleeping bag

This one is called the “ChumBuddy” and was created by 19 year old designer and marine enthusiast Kendra Phillips.

If you’re dying to have one, it costs $199 in the US.

The Selkbag

We’ve feature this one before, but it still remains at the top of the wish list! They made an appearance at the Getaway Show again this year and are available to buy in South Africa.

The original Selk'bag

While the Selk’Bag is unusual, it’s no gimmick. Let the neighbours snigger (or are they shivering?). You, on the other hand, can stumble out of your tent and enjoy a morning coffee while still ensconced in toasty warmth.
The classic adult sizes are selling for R1 200 and kiddies ones cost R999. Now you can kit out your whole family this winter.
