The new Nikon D7100 is great camera for travel and packs a punch when it comes to snapping up those perfect moments.
The new 24.1 megapixel Nikon D7100 weighs in at 675g, is lightweight and compact with a durable weather-resistant body.
The Auto Focus (AF) system with 51 points covers a much wider frame and is a great feature to have. You can really be sure to capture a sharp image in exactly the right place.
It’s seriously user friendly and it’s easy to make your way around the camera to adjust your settings. Of which there are many.
This camera picks up on light quite beautifully and shows barely any noise until you hit 800 ISO. The processing is really quick, except if you leave the shutter open to capture night skies. I was attempting some star-shots in the Pilanesberg and it took a long time for the little green light to say ‘developed’.

The Nikon D7100 comes with an awesome HD camera recording at 60 frames per second and captures beautiful video complemented by stereo sound. The video was of excellent quality and the sound was super too.
The camera is quiet and has great battery life. My other favourite feature is the slot for two memory cards. Simple yes, but essential.
You can use any Nikor AF lens on the D7100 thanks to the internal focus motor so you won’t need to shuffle all your lenses around if you’re a Nikon loyalist.
However, I did find that the colours seemed a bit odd when the white balance was turned to automatic and it took a couple of test shots to get the colours I wanted for my photographs.
The only problem with the Nikon D7100 came in when I tried to upload my pictures. I shot everything in RAW only to find the relevant updates for editing software aren’t available yet in a lot of programs. The Nikon D7100 is not a camera to be messed with. It comes with great features and offers impeccable images. It’s user-friendly and is a good step up from other entry-level DSLRs. If you’re looking for a serious camera that’s a little less pricey this is a great option.
To top it off, it’s also been given the TIPA award for the Best DSLR Advanced Award. The world-renowned award honours the most outstanding photo and imaging products introduced to the market.
The camera alone costs R15 999 or a body and 18 – 105mm VR lens kit costs R19 999.
