Front Runner kit out a Landy Festival goer’s Defender to the tune of R67k. Guy smiles.
The lucky winner of Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters “Pimp My Landy” competition is one happy camper after having his Land Rover turned into an overlanding dream machine at the first annual Landy Fest.
Your stuff is rubbish, have this…
The guy with the biggest smile on his dial at the festival was undoubtedly Ulrich Niehaus, who had a full buffet of Front Runner accessories fitted to his 2.8 Land Rover Defender during the festivities. A self-employed carpenter, Ulrich, could not have been a more deserving winner. Prior to his winning Pimp my Landy all he had on his Defender was a tired looking wooden roof rack and some home made fender tops.
How’d that happen?
All pre-registered Landy Festival goers were automatically placed into a draw for the popular Front Runner Pimp My
Landy competition. The winner of the competition received Front Runner 4×4 accessories to the value of a massive R67
000. These vehicle accessories were fitted to the winner’s Land Rover during the inaugural Landy Festival. While the
two day festival was easily the largest gathering of Land Rover lovers ever seen in South Africa, it’s main aim was the
Sunday assault on the world record for the largest convoy of Land Rovers ever.
No peeking now
Ulrich was not allowed to see his vehicle during the fitment stage which was taking place at the Front Runner stand. He
was given his vehicle back just before the world record attempt. While festival attendees could visit the Front Runner
stand and watch how staff expertly fitted a variety of accessories ranging from a rooftop tent to a roller-drawer system,
Ulrich was kept in suspense until the big reveal.
The swag
The following accessories were pimped onto his Landy: A Front Runner Slimline Roof Rack, Feather-Lite Rooftop Tent,
Feather-Lite Awning, Bull Bar, Steering and Sump Guard, Diff Guard, Seed Net, Centre Console Safe, Drawer System,
Ladder, Single Gas Bottle Bracket, Spare Wheel Carrier; Hi-lift Jack, High-lift Jack Adapter and Carrier, Tail Light
Guards, Two Side Mount Jerry Can Holders and Jerry Cans, Branch Deflectors, Double Jerry Can Brackets, Shovel
Mount and Shovel, Ax Mount and Ax, Under Rack Mount with Stainless Steel Table, Potjie Pot Holder, 40lt Water
Container, Bonnet Protection Plates, Sill Protection Plates, Fender Tops, and 4 Front Runner Expander chairs.
“80 percent of the roof racks are ours”
A decade ago, after much testing and product development, Land Rover South Africa announced Front Runner as their
roof rack supplier of choice. Front Runner Roof Racks are available through the extensive Land Rover South Africa
dealership network. This great relationship has extended overseas where the Front Runner Roof Racks and Accessories
are also in high demand.
Other motoring manufacturers such as Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, Toyota and Kia have also given the Front Runner Roof
Rack their seal of approval. “It gives me a nice warm feeling when I walk around the festival and see that around 80
percent of the roof racks are ours. We are definitely doing something right,” says Front Runner Sales Manager Wayne
Coombe-Heath.
Thanks, I’m outta here!
Competition winner Ulrich is a self confessed Land Rover nut uses his Defender to explore Southern Africa. Now, thanks
to Front Runner and all his much needed new overlanding toys, he is going to be a lot more comfortable in his
exploring.
We asked him where he would be taking his pimped Landy first. “I think there are some fish in the Zambezi River
waiting for me,” said a visibly emotional and beaming Ulrich as he was handed the keys to his pimped Landy. Then,
just like the other thousands of festival goers, he fired up his trusty Landy and took his place near the front of the 1007
vehicle Land Rover convoy in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the biggest Land Rover
convoy ever. While the record still needs to be verified, there is one thing that needs no verification: Ulrich Niehaus’ will
be one happy camper with his new Front Runner pimped out ride.
