March’s finalists
- For me, one of the more photogenic animals is the zebra. One early morning in the Imfolozi section of the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, I stopped and watched this foal sheltered in front of its mother and saw how the sun was shining on its body. In post processing I increased the shadows using the curves adjustment, and then used the burn tool to darken the background. – By Nobby Clarke, Empangeni. Canon 7D, Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L, ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/320 sec.
- It was quite late in the afternoon and the light was fading as we came across this pride of lions in the Thornybush Game Reserve in Limpopo. I knew that it had been a while since the pride had fed, and was hoping that hunger would force them to get active before nightfall. One cub had the same idea, and continuously tried to coax the adults into waking up. I thought that this image told the story of lion society well, highlighting their unique habit being social cats. – By Riaan Fourie, Hoedspruit. Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L, ISO 800, f/2.8, 1/30 sec.
- I got a tip from a good friend that about 80 to 100 flamingos had made a near empty dam on a dairy farm in Mpumalanga, South Africa, their home for the time being… So, on day one I went to introduce myself to the farmer and to ask his permission to take photographs. Before sunrise the next day I was there with camera in hand. – By Rudi van den Heever, Pretoria. Canon 7D Mark II, Canon EF 500mm f/4L, ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/1000
- They talk about first time lucky! This was my first time visiting the Boulders Beach and there were lots of people, but I managed to slip through the crowd and take this image from a low angle just as this boat passed by. I waited until the boat reached the point I wanted to better frame my shot. – By Ilonde van Hoolwerff, Tableview. Canon EOS 3, Sigma 24-80mm f/2.8, ASA Fuji Velvia 35mm slide film, ISO 50, f/22, 1/125 sec
- I realized there were some interesting bird interactions going on amongst the birds in my garden, so I set out to capture some of it. The ideal spot to capture the action was under a tree, lit by late sunlight. The background was an open space leading into shadowed bush, causing the background to fall into darkness. In this image, two male Southern masked weavers fight to establish domination. – By Willem Kruger, Bloemfontein. Nikon D4, Nikkor 600mm f/4, ISO 1250, f/8, 1/6400 sec.
- Red Hartebeest enjoying his view. Image taken in Maasai Mara, Kenya. – By Anna-Mart Kruger, Walvis Bay. Nikon D610, Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3, ISO 1600, f/25, 1/500 sec.
- I was visiting Tugela Mouth in KZN when I spotted this African pygmy kingfisher. It had a nest in a mud wall and it must have had some babies as it was carrying food to the nest. – By Charlene Bacchioni, Centurion. Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 600mm f/4L IS USM, ISO 1600,f/7.1, 1/2500 sec.
- Impala ram drinking at the Matabole Hide. Image taken in Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. – By Anna-Mart Kruger, Walvis Bay. Nikon D610, Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3, ISO 6400, f/6.3, 1/1000 sec.
- I gave the image this name since it portrays all weather conditions: sun, rain, wind and cloud. Now we know the reason behind the name “Cape of Storms”. It was raining, but I could see there was a gap on the horizon and I knew I could catch something amazing so I waited. By the end my camera and myself were soaking wet, but it was worth the shot! – By Ilonde van Hoolwerff, Tableview. Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 24-105mm f/4L, ISO 50, f/13, 0.3 sec.
- I almost did not go out for the shoot due to the massive bank of clouds and the hidden sun… but just after sunset a magical display of colours made me gasp in awe! I was already on my way home, but it was the quickest I ever unpacked my gear… – By Rudi van den Heever, Pretoria. Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 16-35 mm F2.8 L II, ISO 100, f/16, 1.3 sec and 4 sec blended exposures.
