Whether you’re timid or intrepid, there’s adventure to be had in November’s Getaway
Three groups of adventurers walk hundreds of kilometres among dangerous beasts to draw attention to the effect of the pandemic (and resulting dearth of tourism) on local communities. We follow kayakers on first descents down raging rivers, and explore more sedate, but no less thrilling, ways to ride our wonderful waterways. We bump along legendary trails in the Baviaanskloof to swim its hidden gorges and reveal Zululand’s lesser-known game reserves.
A pair of intrepid photographers spend years in the wild planning and preparing for that one chance, that one shot, that captures the whole experience in an instant, and we bring you an extra treat: our first truly foreign destination after many months. A hint of travels to come, a lure to lift your spirits over the seas to the city of soul, Bangkok, where immersion is complete.
Zululand: unfiltered and unfenced
There are a string of lesser-known game reserves in Northern KwaZulu-Natal that offer some of the most intimate and thrilling wildlife encounters in the country – think pangolin walks, camping in unfenced Big Five country and elephant-monitoring boat safaris. Add these six to your game-reserve itinerary.
Walking with intent
With the pandemic wreaking havoc on the tourism industry, three unrelated groups of adventurers hit on the same idea: an epic wilderness walk to help local communities.
The republic of baboons
There’s just one lonely road through the Baviaanskloof; the rest is big, wild, largely inaccessible backcountry, a realm made for hiking, mountain biking and 4x4ing.
