Photographing natural diamonds after African rains

Posted on 7 January 2011

There are few things that beat lying in your warm, cosy bed listening to the sound of rain dancing on a tin roof above your head. The smell of African soil drifting through your open window brings your senses to complete euphoria – isn’t it great living in Africa!

That being said, as an avid photography enthusiast, a night’s rain gives you the opportunity to get out and take some really incredible macro shots. During the night, the water droplets would have collected on the plants and flowers creating ‘natural diamonds’. These are always great subjects and more often than not, lend themselves to great photographic opportunites.

Ultimately, it would be best if you had a macro lens at your disposal but if not, you can get some astounding results without using one. I don’t have a macro lens myself so I use my trusty old Sigma 18-200mm lens, which does the job perfectly.

So the next time it rains, get ready to grab your camera equipment and head out into the diamond mine! Look closely and you’ll see the beauty in the smaller things that many people often overlook.
