A few weeks ago I accepted a photography contract with Getaway magazine. It meant leaving what I know and hold dear in Durban. But for an opportunity like this, how could I not? These are some photos of my road trip from Durban to Cape Town.
With decisions made, bags packed and camera gear double-checked, we set off on the road on the early hours of a Friday morning. Sunflowers lined the roads in their hordes and a thunderstorm blew in just before the Karoo, pelting us with a dizzying flood of rain. I inched our way through, swerving every now and then to miss some of the birds which inexplicably decided to find shelter on the open tarmac.
I do feel a bit guilty for having such doubts about my Getz though. There I was, thinking that with three people and luggage my slip of silver would start groaning and crawling on the road trip from Durban to Cape Town, ready to admit defeat at the first uphill. In actual fact she did so well that we even managed to get a speeding ticket! Before we knew it the Karoo stretched around us; always my favourite part of the journey. The open spaces, arid landscapes and small towns we passed through beg to be explored, demanding my return.
I have spent the last few days learning how to survive when my GPS switches off and adding to my photography to-do list. There are so many beautiful sights to visit and photograph that I’ve written them down on paper lest I forget! I hope to tackle at least one or two per week while I am living here.
In the meantime, here are a few photos from the road from Durban to Cape Town.
