The West Coast of South Africa can be as pretty as a postcard and as devilishly dramatic as a tornado. From flowers and sunshine to storm-tossed seas pounding jagged rocks, it’s all grist to the mill for a roaming photographer.
A couple of years back, I was lucky enough to be sent on a long drive up to Lambert’s Bay, stopping at anything and anyplace that looked interesting along the way. I can heartily recommend this as a holiday to fellow photographers.
The most obvious destination for photographers is Paternoster. If you’re lucky, as I was, the colourful fishing boats will be sprinkled across the beach as the sun sets. If you’re really lucky (as I was) a little boy will run past rolling a tyre in much the same way as little Victorian boys used to roll hoops.
A walk along the shoreline from Tietiesbay, in Cape Columbine nature reserve, will also yield great shots from rocks and cliff-tops – but that’s if you can tear yourself away from the Lighthouse, a very fruitful photographic subject indeed…
