Not a working farm, per-say, but this gem, located opposite Stornoway Lodge in Lanseria, is where you’ll find a number of charming family-friendly attractions including a tea garden, restaurants, a ceramic painting café, an art gallery, a play area for the kids, a farm stall, and a peaceful pond to gaze off into on a comfortable Sunday afternoon, geese included.
3. Ludwig’s Rose Farm, Pretoria North
Ludwig’s Roses is a renowned rose farm north of Pretoria that has been enchanting visitors for over five decades. Established in 1971 by Ludwig Taschner, the farm has grown into a leading center for rose propagation in SA, offering more than 1,000 different rose varieties.
The farm is a vibrant gem, especially in summer when the roses are in full bloom. Ludwig advises to visit from the end of September onwards, to see the rose farm in its fully glory.
Visitors can enjoy a meal at The Rose Kitchen, a rose-themed restaurant that offers a variety of dishes, including German-inspired meals and rose-infused drinks. Asher’s Farm Sanctuary, established in 2017 in Pretoria East, is a safe haven for over 50 farm animals rescued from exploitation. The sanctuary spans 8.5 hectares and serves as a refuge for farm animals, as well as a compassionate voice against the harsh realities of factory farming.
The sanctuary aims to raise awareness about the impacts of factory farming on both animals and the environment with free guided tours where guests are able to meet the farm’s friendly animals. The spot also encourages healthier, plant-based eating with an all-vegan restaurant. The sanctuary’s on-site shop features a variety of vegan products, too – from frozen meals to snacks and desserts.
Asher’s Farm Sanctuary is open from Wednesdays to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
