Dinner and a movie
You’re going to want to wear stretchy pants for this one. Preferably elegant ones that suit the upmarket feel at the five-star Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, because after a three-course meal with beautiful views over the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll need space for popcorn and snacks with the movie.
The Dinner and a Movie night returns to the Twelve Apostles and is suitable for a special occasion or even just a night out with friends. It may not be something you can do every week, but at R350 per person it’s certainly something affordable you can bookmark for a cosy and different night out this winter.
Start the evening with a mise en bouche (it’s an appetizer, but I felt like sounding fancy) before tucking into starters – here I’d recommend the salmon, but if it’s a chilly evening, perhaps opt for the soup and chicken pie. For mains, our waiter highly recommended the Cape Malay chicken curry (with nine sambals) and other guests were impressed, but I opted for a seafood pasta (not on the menu, but I asked really, really nicely) after not being able to decide between Fish du Jour served with white asparagus, porcini mushroom, cauliflower puree and smoked potato; and a vegetarian pasta.
By now you’ll probably feel stuffed, but you’ll have to get through dessert before the movie. There’s traditional vanilla crème brûlée; or dark chocolate cake with cherry compote, whipped chantilly, apricot and almond sugar cone crisp. I went with the crème brûlée – the chocolate cake portion looked a bit too big for the space left in my tummy. After a delicious dinner, the waiter will take your order for movie drinks before you head to the 16-seater cinema. While watching the movie you can enjoy milkshake (the Horlicks one is amazing), hot chocolate, ice cream, sweets and popcorn, if you still have space.
The hotel’s monthly movie schedule features a wide range of films, from classics such as Singin’ in the Rain, Roman Holiday and Indiana Jones, to recent blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter, The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City.
For those wanting to make the evening even more special, you can turn it into Dinner and a Movie…and Overnight, by staying over in one of the luxury Twelve Apostles guest rooms. Prices are from R1227,50 per person sharing a night, including a full English breakfast.
