City slickers with a hunger for all things nature may think finding a fauna and flora fix is near impossible. But they’d be wrong …
The Johannesburg Hiking Club (JHC) holds weekly hikes every Wednesday and Sunday and last week’s location, Castle Gorge in Magaliesberg is one of my favourites.
Upon arrival, hikers are divided, according to their ability and experience, into different groups with a leader to guide each one.
The trail begins with a shaded uphill climb to the top of the mountain ridge. Though challenging, even beginner hikers (such as myself) should be able to cope with the incline.
Though the landscape is fairly dry and rocky, there are some great green views from the top.
Once at the top, we made our way to the rock pools for a well-deserved lunch and a dip in the cool water. There is also a waterfall about 500 metres from the rock pools, and the remains of old Boer War forts. The eight-to-nine kilometre hike ends back at the foot of the mountain later in the afternoon. You’re looking at a full day of outdoor activity, starting at around 08h00 if you meet the other hikers at the meeting spot first, and ending at around 15h30.
What to pack for the hike
- Sunblock and a hat
- Swimming costume and towel
- Minimum of two litres of water and a packed lunch
- Camera
- R40 for non-members
- Hiking boots (they aren’t compulsory, but they definitely make the experience more comfortable)
