The historic Johannesburg Planetarium has been transformed into the state-of-the-art Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, offering 360-degree experiences for visitors of all ages.

The facility, which received a R90 million investment from Anglo American and Wits University, is now the largest digital dome in the southern hemisphere. It features ten new digital projectors delivering 8K resolution with an advanced audio system, replacing the original Zeiss projector from 1960.
“Visitors will feel as if they are part of the shows – whether they are gliding through the International Space Station or following wildebeest migrations in the Serengeti,” says Dr Moumita Aich, Head of the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome.
Beyond entertainment, the facility will serve as a modern teaching venue and research space for disciplines ranging from astrophysics to digital arts.
The dome will enter a pilot phase until January 2025, with public access beginning in February 2025.
Initial programming will include six full dome shows donated by the American Museum of Natural History.
Future plans include developing local content through partnerships with the Wits School of Arts, Digital Arts, and the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct.
