Are you looking to encounter formations that will rock (pun intended) your world in South Africa? Take a look at a few cliffs and rocky structures that are sure to leave an impression.

The Pinnacle Rock (Graskop, Mpumalanga)

Along the lush vegetation of Mpumalanga, you’ll come across a large structure that almost seems unearthly. Pinnacle Rock is a rock tower structure which is naturally constructed from quartzite rock and is around 30 meters tall.

Whether you see it from afar or wade your way through the thriving forest of Driekop Gorge, you’ll be transfixed by what nature is capable of. In the forest and surrounding this towered structure, you’ll also have the opportunity to encounter a variety of indigenous plants and local wildlife that call this place their home.

If you’re planning to make this a getaway trip, be sure to visit the quaint town to explore the kaleidoscope of nature-based activities it offers. From God’s Window to the iconic Three Rondavels, Graskop is the perfect place to see a network of rock formations in one setting.

Hole in the Wall (Coffee Bay, Western Cape)

Easily one of the ultimate holes to visit in South Africa, Hole in the Wall is a rock formation like no other. A detached cliff with a crater in the middle from the force of the waves carving this opening, this structure is a wonderful example of the sheer power nature can have. Around the formation, travellers can enjoy various hiking trails and beaches.

Valley of Desolation (Graaff-Reinet, Western Cape)

While the name alone might scare you off, the Valley of Desolation is a magnificent network of cliffs and rock formations with stunning panoramic views of the valleys below. The dolerite columns are a sight to behold, and the Great Karoo surroundings will make you feel small in a wide and expansive world.

There are approximately 100,000 visitors that make their way to this iconic place, so be sure not to miss out on this unforgettable adventure to these rock formations. You’ll need to enter the Camdeboo National Park to see these formations up close.

Wolfberg Cracks (Cederberg, Western Cape)

If you’re looking for an epic adventure and hike filled with enchanting rock formations to enjoy, a hike to the Wolfberg Cracks is a journey you’ll never forget. With lots of climbing and boulder hopping along the way, you’ll feel you really connect with the rock formations rather than just viewing them.

The hike to the Wolfberg Cracks is around 4.5km, but if your fitness level allows, you can go much further to see even more rock formations en route.
