7 February marks the anniversary of what was some of the worst flooding ever experienced in the southern parts of Kruger National Park 23 years ago.
Just as the new millennium was getting into gear in the year 2000 a thunderous storm brought torrential rainfall over the catchment of Kruger’s major rivers – Crocodile, Sabie, Sand and Nwaswitsontso.
Heavy rainfall resulted in record water levels by the afternoon, with several camps having to close for weeks, and even months for some. Even though the storm damaged infrastructure in the park, no lives were lost with park employees working tirelessly behind the scenes. More than 300 tourists and staff had to be evacuated from the rivers.
