75-year-old Jean-Jacques Savin has been declared missing halfway through his journey to row across the Atlantic Ocean by himself, when he sent distress signals on January 20.

Savin set sail from Portugal on January 1, in what he described as his ‘last challenge at sea,’ which entailed rowing from Portugal across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Thirteen days into his journey, he celebrated his 75th birthday, according to Washington Post.

However, things took a turn for the worst when Savin activated his distress beacons on Thursday, January 20, which prompted the Portuguese authorities to launch a search and rescue operation that same day.

The rescue mission was comprised of 11 merchant ships, three Portuguese aircraft, and one Portuguese naval ship. In addition to finding a waterproof bag with his identification documents inside, the Portuguese coast guard also found his capsized vessel near the Azores, the Portuguese archipelago, on Friday, January 21.

The next day, a diver was sent down to search for it and found his body ‘lifeless inside the cabin;
