Evolutionary physiologist and nature author Barry Lovegrove passed away on 6 March 2022. Lovegrove was well-known for his pivotal contributions to research about the deserts of southern Africa.

Over the course of his career, Lovegrove explored many mysteries associated with life in the desert.

One of the earlier editions of his book, The Living Deserts of Southern Africa, explored how such a wide array of plants, insects, reptiles, mammals and birds successfully exist in South Africa’s arid biomes. The text was supported with diagrams, maps, and relevant photos and was published in 1993.

Lovegrove worked tirelessly during South Africa’s lockdown to fully revise The Living Deserts of Southern Africa. He travelled to the Karoo, Kalahari, Namibia and Namaqualand. After months of research, Lovegrove published the revised edition of his text in late 2021. The text explores the survival mechanisms plants and animals developed as a result of the physical challenges of the desert.
