Airports Company South Africa says that it has resolved its refuelling issue that affected 41 flights on 28 December, stating that it had a successful peak season despite technical issues.
The festive season saw thousands of passengers pass through OR Tambo with ACSA CEO, Mpumi Mpofu, stating that the airport had close to 300 departing air traffic movements per day, both domestic and international.
‘In terms of daily passenger volumes, the airport processed more than 27 000 departing domestic passengers per day on December 9, 16 and 23, which amounted to a 78% recovery rate from the previous year’s volumes,’ Mpofu said.
She also added that the issue with the main supply valve that’s used to supply fuel to aircraft being unable to open has since been resolved.
‘The swift manner with which ACSA dealt with the challenge minimised the impact and ensured that flights returned to normal within a reasonable time.
‘We are now in a position to fast-track the implementation of mitigating projects that will help us ensure we do not have a reoccurrence of this nature.’
December saw an 80% recovery in air traffic from 2019 but did not have a figure on the financial costs of the disruption. ‘We are ready to handle the influx on January 6 as travellers return from holiday,’ she concluded.
