African air traffic sees growth

African airlines are anticipated to experience an estimated 15% growth in passenger traffic this year from 2023 figures.

This is as per the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) performance update for July 2024.

According to TravelNews, the introduction of new routes, network expansions and fleet upgrades all serve as factors contributing to this growth.

“Africa’s aviation industry continues to perform strongly, with increased passenger traffic and improved operational efficiency,” says AFRAA.

Moreover, capacity in the form of available seats grew by 7%. This took the number from 16 million seats in July 2023 to 17 million seats this year.

“Key drivers also include expanded routes, better connectivity, and rising domestic and international travel demand,” AFRAA added.

Yet, the report highlighted the year-on-year increase for passenger kilometres as only 1,3%. Major hubs, including Addis Ababa, Lusaka, Johannesburg and Lomé, experienced significant increases in connectivity.
