African wildcat leaps from tree to escape caracal in Kgalagadi

Posted on 9 September 2021 By David Henning

What happens when two solitary wild cats cross paths? One lucky photographer was fortunate enough to witness an encounter between two elusive animals, a caracal and an African wildcat in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Caracals are known to hunt the occasional domestic cat near urban areas and Simon Smith managed to capture the unusual scene of a caracal chasing the wildcat into a tree, before the wildcat took a leap into the air jumping several metres to the ground to try and avoid the caracal.

The caracal still caught up with it, and the wildcat didn’t manage to get away this time.
