Posted on 29 April 2025

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has officially launched the construction of the Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed rail line.

As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, it is set to be the longest of its kind in Africa.

Stretching over 430 kilometers, this line will link major Moroccan cities such as Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech. This will shorten travel times significantly, and enhance the nation’s status as a leader in sustainable transportation and infrastructure development across the continent.

As a key component of a $9.5 billion national railway initiative, the new high-speed rail (HSR) extension is designed to facilitate train speeds of up to 350 km/h, connecting Tangier to Marrakech in less than three hours.

With a focus on local manufacturing and strategic international collaborations with companies such as Alstom, CAF and Hyundai Rotem, the project is anticipated to create thousands of jobs. It is also expected to boost tourism and economic mobility throughout Morocco.
