Located northwest of Johannesburg, Lanseria International Airport has several new developments in the works. The projects are aimed at making the airport more accessible and attractive for tourists and airlines.

According to Travel News, the new developments include the construction of new Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facilities, as well as the establishment of new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.
There are also plans of a fuel farm/depot which will add approximately 6 million litres of JetA1 fuel and Avgas to the current 1 million litre farm capacity.
Moreover, developments also include an upgrade of the Taxiway Alpha which will be converted to a different Code-type, allowing it to accommodate larger aircrafts.
Speaking to Travel News, Lanseria International Airport CEO, Rampa Rammopo, expressed that the new developments and improvements would address many of the current limitations which deter some airlines (such as SAA and Airlink) from operating at the airport.
‘The comprehensive development projects are set to substantially increase the airport’s capacity to handle additional volumes of traffic by attracting more airlines and expanding the number of routes offered, particularly into other parts of Africa,’ he said.

Rammopo further stated that with the establishing of more routes, the airport would play a pivotal role in making the country and the continent a lot more accessible.
‘This enhanced connectivity is expected to attract a higher volume of international visitors, boosting the tourism sector in South Africa’.
Lanseria’s current growth strategy is focused on increasing domestic routes and attracting regional air traffic services. According to the CEO, this also includes adding new routes to key regional destinations including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mauritius.
