Alaska Airlines has made the decision to make use of yellow cards to ensure passengers wear their masks during flights. The airline’s flight attendants will now be able to issue a yellow card to passengers who repeatedly refuse to wear their masks or face coverings while aboard.
When a passenger receives a yellow card, their travel will be reviewed in a final report, which may result in the passenger being suspended from flying with Alaska.
Exceptions will be made for children who are two years old and younger, as well as those with medical problems that cause trouble breathing while wearing a mask, and those who cannot remove a mask without assistance.
‘Overwhelmingly, those who fly with us understand and appreciate the importance of wearing masks and face coverings during this time of COVID-19,’ the airline says on its blog. ‘We also rely heavily on our guests to do the right thing for the greater good of everyone onboard our flights. Our flight crews encounter moments when some travelers disregard or disobey our mask requirement. It creates tension and anxiety for many of our passengers who do have their face coverings on. So, a change is needed.’
Masks will be made available upon request in case customers have forgotten theirs, and flyers are allowed to adjust their masks to eat or drink while on the flight.
The mask enforcement will begin during the check-in process, where customers will be asked to sign off on a required health agreement to acknowledge their willingness to adhere to the mask policy.
