Vice Admiral Ramon Gustavo Betances Hernandez reported that strong 30-knot winds had caused the ship to run aground, but that there was no damage to the vessel, according to Al Jazeera.
Hernandez added that they were already working to free the vessel: ‘The tide in this area rises about 1 metre at four in the morning (8am GMT). We think that with the high tide, we can get the boat out of its current position.’
He also stated that there was no current risk to the 3000 passengers and 1 600 crew members on board. Additional tugs are set to arrive seen to help free the vessel.
