Another rhino orphaned by poaching gives birth to healthy calf

Posted on 3 March 2022 By Chloe Cowley

Only two weeks ago, white rhino cow Wyntir made history by becoming the first orphaned rhino to conceive and deliver a baby calf naturally. Now, another orphaned white rhino, River, gave birth to a bull calf.

This is the second calf to be born at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in three weeks and the team is moved by yet another historic moment for the future of rhino conservation.

According to the team, River has always been a fiery rhino who is fiercely protective of her crash. She was rescued in September 2014, after her mother was killed by poachers. River had been attacked by lions that left deep gashes on her thighs. Despite her good healing, she still has the scars to show for her continued battle for survival.

Now that River is a mother, her instinct to protect is at an all-time high.

Both parents, River and Storm, were very young when their parents were killed by poachers. Since then, the sanctuary has put them through an immense rewilding and rehabilitation programme. Having not been raised by their own mothers and being unsure on how to behave in the dynamics of wild crashes of rhinos, the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary said in a post on Facebook that the birth of their calf is ‘ an amazing and extremely humbling time.’
