Archbishop calls for Cape Town Airport to be renamed after Desmond Tutu

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of Cape Town has suggested that Cape Town International Airport be renamed the Desmond Mpilo Tutu International Airport.

Increase in domestic travels results in more job opportunities

This was after he laid Tutu’s ashes at the St George’s cathedral during a private ceremony recently.

‘Let those of us who have resources pull in our belts, that others can eat enough to fill their stomachs,’ Makgoba said according to Sowetan Live. ‘Let us re-order our society to end inequality and create equal opportunities for all. And why don’t we rename the Cape Town International Airport the Desmond Mpilo Tutu International Airport?’

No formal steps have been taken toward a name change yet.

Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, died at the age of 90 on 26 December 2021.

A new airport in the province, the Cape Winelands Airport owned by investor Rob Hersov has its goals set straight at becoming a direct competition to the Cape Town International Airport in the near future.
