The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) reported on Tuesday 20 August that the ship had seen further wreckage, resulting in oil spillage on the nearby beach.

Stormy weather and high swells experienced on SA’s West Coast in recent days caused the wreck to “split further, break apart and turn over,” according to SAMSA.

The authority added that “almost of the entire length of her hull [is] now underwater.”

Aerial inspections conducted by the authority on Monday and over the weekend revealed the presence of oil in the surrounding waters. SAMSA also noted that there was “a strong odour, indicating leaks.”

The authority added that the spilled oil is “drifting within the predicted drift patterns and is washing up onto the immediate beaches, as predicted.”

The exact volume of oil released from the wreck remains uncertain.

SAMSA is working closely with the salvage team and local authorities to manage the environmental impact of this latest development.

In response to the situation, cleanup operations have been intensified.

SAMSA reported that up to 200 people are currently involved in the cleanup effort addressing the “immediate need for enhanced cleanup operations.”

The authority is also conducting additional pollution patrols along the adjoining beaches to ensure that the oil does not drift beyond the predicted area.

SAMSA stated that they will “continue to be monitored closely to determine the most efficient, most suitable and safest course of action.”

It has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of oil or debris along the West Coast.

The authority advised against attempts to salvage debris, proper disposal is required to minimise harm to the community and environment.
