Blue Train services suspended following a fire and derailment

After the Covid pandemic meant that the Blue Train had to spend most of 2020 out of service, the luxury train has had to deal with constant disruptions since trying to return to operations.

All aboard the Blue Train

A fire broke out on the Blue Train on 8 February while the train was in for repairs at the company’s engineering facility in Koedoespoort. Three suspects were seen fleeing the scene, with one person being apprehended by Transnet security, a statement read.

Transnet has since announced that operations will be suspended ‘until further notice’.

The train is renowned for its overland journey between Cape Town and Johannesburg and was pleased to reopen to the public again in November 2020.

But, it has hit a number of speed bumps recently, compounding the difficulties caused by Covid. In November of 2021, the train derailed outside of the Union Station in Germiston. No one was on board.
