Port health officials have developed an outbreak preparedness plan to address monkeypox (Mpox) at all South African ports of entry, announced Dr. Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA).

In response to the 13 confirmed cases by the National Department of Health, the BMA is implementing screening processes for travellers entering the country. The first airport phase involves the conveyance operator, such as the captain and crew members, providing a general health declaration. This document, required by International Health Regulations, declares that no travellers on board are ill.
The next phase involves thermal screening to check passengers’ temperatures. This process is also applied at land and seaports. Travellers with elevated temperatures will be isolated and undergo further screening, including interviews to identify other symptoms. BMA Port Health Officers will conduct general and non-invasive observations of the traveller under investigation.
‘BMA Port Health officers are trained to observe for any lesions and other symptoms. If a case requires further referral, arrangements are in place with the Department of Health for ambulance services to healthcare facilities,’ Masiapato stated. He added that the BMA collaborates closely with communicable disease facilities in the districts to ensure swift response and immediate reporting of any suspected Mpox cases.
Health education and awareness for travellers have been elevated, with no Mpox suspicions detected at ports of entry thus far. The authority encourages travellers to continue with chronic conditions medication, as those with chronic conditions may present more severe symptoms. Travellers suspecting symptoms are urged to seek medical care immediately, especially those with a travel history to areas with Mpox cases.
