A boat accident on the Black Volta River in Ghana has left one person dead and 50 people missing.
While transporting passengers from Dorkorchina to Kpandai on Saturday, 27 May, the boat capsized.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Bole district director Kipo Sulemana said that ‘the boat, which was overloaded with passengers and goods, hit a tree stump in the river and capsized.’
Search and rescue efforts have been extremely difficult as the area of the accident is inaccessible. Locals are currently helping rescue teams find the missing people.
The BBC reported that no one was wearing a life jacket, but two people on the boat were able to swim to safety.
