Spring has sprung across the Northern Hemisphere, with some of the most beautiful flowers bursting into full bloom. While South Africa gears up for winter, we can live vicariously through social media and admire the flora of other countries from the comfort of home.
Netherlands
The Netherlands is famous for its brightly coloured tulips. These flowers are an absolute treat to the eye and blossom in a multitude of colours. Rich reds, deep purples and different pastel petals are emerging across the country. Tulip fields are an extraordinary sight to behold.

Japan
Japan is highly celebrated this time of the year as cherry blossom season starts, blanketing the country in pink and white petals. This is an extremely popular time of year for visitors, but since no one is going anywhere anytime soon, the photographs will have to suffice. Cherry or ‘sakura’ blossom season sees people and their families going to marvel over the flowers, a practice known as ‘Hanami’ or flower viewing. There are many traditional cultural experiences to participate in too.

Belgium
The bluebells in Belgium are something out of a fairy tale. Belgium is famous for it’s chocolate and waffles but the bluebells are a strong contender for international affection. Currently the flowers are blooming and the site of them is truly phenomenal. The flowers carpet the Belgian forest Hallerbos, the national forest in Halle, with their electric blue-purple colour.

California
Lancaster in California is painted bright red, orange and yellow at this time each year. With the annual poppy season well underway, we can’t help but draw a resemblance in colour to the Namaqua flowers that bloom in the Northern Cape.
