The massive statue of Jesus Christ is well under construction in southern Brazil and stands taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue.
The new statue, to be named ‘Christ the Protector’ is being built in Encantado, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and will stand 43 meters tall making it one of the world’s tallest statues of Christ with outstretched arms.
The statue is the work of sculptor Genesio Gomes Moura and his son, Markus Moura.
According to a local organisation, Friends of Christ Association (AACristo), who is building the statue, the construction of this new project which began in July 2019 is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
The head and arms of the statue were installed on April 6 and AACristo is asking for donations to help finish the project which will cost about $353 000 in total.
An elevator to transport tourists to the top of the statue where they’ll be able to take magical pictures of the landscape will be installed inside the structure.
‘It will be a glass opening from where people will be able to film and photograph the valley,’ head project supervisor Artur Lopes de Souza said on the AACristo website.
With this project, the country is looking at boosting its tourism in Encantado, which is close to the borders of Uruguay and Argentina.
