British Airways (BA) is set to significantly increase its capacity on the Johannesburg route starting from June 2, 2025. The airline will utilize Airbus A380 aircraft for both of its daily services between London Heathrow (LHR) and Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), replacing one of the current Boeing 777-300ER flights.

This shift involves transitioning flights BA56 and BA57 from the B777 to the A380, aligning them with the already-operating A380 services, BA54 and BA55. The change will boost the route’s seat capacity by about 30%, providing an additional 215 seats per flight in each direction.

The A380, which is the largest aircraft in BA’s fleet, offers a considerable increase in seating: 173 extra seats in economy class, 15 more in premium economy, 21 additional business class seats, and six more in first class compared to the Boeing 777-300ER.

The schedules for the daily flights remain unchanged, with the following departures and arrivals:

  • BA55: Leaves LHR at 19:05, arriving in JNB at 07:15 the next morning.
  • BA54: Departs JNB at 21:05, arriving at LHR at 07:25 the following day.
  • BA57: Departs LHR at 21:25, arriving in JNB at 09:25 the next day.
  • BA56: Leaves JNB at 19:20, arriving at LHR at 05:30 the following morning
