The prestigious Cape to St Helena Yacht Race, a cornerstone of international sailing, is gearing up for its December 28 start. Eight vessels, including the defending champion Tintin, will go on the 1,700-nautical-mile journey from Cape Town to the remote island of St Helena, continuing a rich maritime tradition that dates back 28 years.

The adventure begins on December 23 with the traditional Blue Peter party at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), where family, friends, and supporters will gather to send off the sailors in high spirits. The race will culminate in a grand prize-giving ceremony at St Helena’s historic Plantation House on January 10, 2025.

Among the competitors are Umoya, Atalanta, Flica, Magnus, Fryd, Magic Dragon, and Mwera, each helmed by seasoned skippers, promising an exhilarating contest across the South Atlantic.

‘This epic race represents not just growth in competitive sailing but also the RCYC’s commitment to fostering world-class sailing events,’ said David Garrard, Vice Commodore of the RCYC and chairman of the 2024 organizing committee.

St Helena’s Head of Tourism, Matt Joshua, highlighted the island’s maritime heritage, emphasizing its importance as a vital Atlantic crossing point and the excitement of sharing its unique culture with the sailors.

The Cape to St Helena Yacht Race is one of the few competitions to finish at such a remote destination, adding a unique allure. Beyond the fierce competition, participants can explore St Helena’s rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant community.

For adventurers inspired by the event, Airlink offers weekly flights from Johannesburg and seasonal flights from Cape Town to St Helena, providing a gateway to this extraordinary island experience.

As Garrard aptly said, ‘The magic of St Helena is undeniable,’ promising an unforgettable journey for sailors and visitors alike.
