CapeNature has expressed its disappointment over certain members of the public who have disregarded the Alert Level 3 regulations implemented on 29 December 2020.
In line with the Level 3 lockdown regulations, CapeNature was forced to stop certain activities, which included the closure of all hiking trails where there are no formal access control measures in place.
Despite these closures being widely communicated and the sales of permits for these hiking trails halted, CapeNature has seen a flurry of illegal access at the Limietberg Nature Reserve, particularly on the Kromrivier and Elandsriver trails.
There have been a number of ramifications caused by certain parties illegally entering and parking at these sites. These include extensive littering, starting of illegal fires and exceeding the trail carrying capacity resulting in new paths being created through pristine areas.
According to a statement, ‘CapeNature is currently in discussion with law enforcement agencies to clamp down on this lawlessness. Trespassers will be prosecuted and will have to face the full might of the law.’
CapeNature has urged everyone to abide by and respect the National Government regulations. Not only are the pristine landscape of the Limietberg Nature Reserve, Kromrivier and Elandsriver trails being put at risk, but illegal gatherings in places where no formal access control measures can be implemented further the spread of the coronavirus.
