As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, this challenge has been launched by SITA, the air industry’s global leader in IT and technology solutions. It is also in partnership with Innovate UK, the national innovation agency of the UK Government.

The challenge is open for innovators from across the globe to develop cost effective and scalable solutions which will optimize turnaround times. They also need to directly address the unique needs of smaller airports.

Successful applicants stand the chance to win seed funding to the value of R568 795, together with the opportunity to collaborate with SITA on trial projects.

The challenge is aimed at achieving a one-fifth reduction in CO2 emissions. It also targets wasted resources caused by using auxiliary power units when the aircraft is not in motion and serviced between flights.

Selim Bouri, SITA President for the Middle East and Africa, expressed that optimizing aircraft turnaround times can also lead to saving related operating costs.

‘This is crucial in Africa, where demand for air transport is set to double over the next 15 years, but where connectivity between markets is often inadequate and airlines struggle to make a profit amid infrastructure inefficiencies,’ explained Bouri.
