Residents of Olten, a small Swiss town between Zurich and Basel were pleasantly surprised when it began raining chocolate powder after a malfunction at a Lindt factory.
The Lindt & Spruengli company confirmed to a local newspaper that a malfunction in their factory’s ventilation system is to blame. There was a minor defect in the cooling ventilation for their cocoa nibs. This, paired with strong winds the town had recently been experiencing, caused fine cocoa powder to fly around in the surrounding area of the factory and make it appear as if it were raining chocolate dust.
The ventilation system has since been repaired and chocolate production continues as normal.
Officials from the company say that the cocoa powder poses no health risk to humans and no risk to the local environment. They have also offered to cover any cleaning costs for vehicles or property that ended up covered in fine dustings of the powder.
