The Democratic Alliance has launched a campaign that hopes to see a petition handed to government, calling for inter-provincial leisure travel to reopen.
‘We call on government to allow South Africans to travel to any province that they may wish whilst also being permitted to enjoy all activities on offer at any of the tourism & hospitality facilities,’ shadow Tourism Minister Manny de Freitas said on Twitter.
‘Many flourishing businesses have been decimated and thousands of jobs have been lost. South Africans are encouraged to sign and distribute the petition as widely as possible. It will then be handed to Parliament when the DA will request that the demands are adhered to, thus saving livelihoods as well as lives,’ De Freitas added at the launch of the campaign on Monday, August 10.
🇿🇦| Sectors within the tourism, hospitality & restaurant industries have been peacefully demonstrating against lockdown regulations crippling the economy – enforced without scientific reasoning.
We have now launched a petition to help save these sectors.https://t.co/qHCy2tBqG2

Members of the public in support of the campaign are urged to sign the petition. The DA plans to take the petition to parliament once it has 20,000 signatures. The petition currently has 7,042 signatures.
‘Every day that this sector is forbidden from doing business, the Tourism Industry loses approximately R748 million,’ the DA says.
