At least 65 deaths have been recorded nationwide in the United States in the midst of an extreme cold front that has gripped the country, reports CNBC. The worst-affected area is Buffalo in New York state.
Heavy snowfall has led to a temporary ban on driving in the city, but authorities say motorists are still seen on the roads, hampering rescue efforts. People have died from the cold outdoors or while trying to clear snow, while others were indoors but had no heating.
‘People … got stranded in their vehicles and passed away in their cars. We have people that were walking during blizzard conditions and passed away on the street, passed away in snowbanks,’ Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said according to CNN. ‘And we have people that were found that passed away in their homes.’
Even the massive Niagra Falls has frozen in parts due to the plummet in temperatures.
A state of emergency was declared for New York by President Joe Biden on Monday, 26 December.
