Delta Airlines’ free WiFi set to take off in SA

Delta Airlines is gearing up to enhance its in-flight experience on a global scale, with its much-anticipated free WiFi service set to roll out internationally, including on South African routes by mid-2025. This move marks a significant milestone in the airline’s mission to provide seamless connectivity to its passengers domestically and internationally.

Ranjan Goswami, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience Design at Delta Airlines, emphasised the importance of this rollout, stating,

‘As we continue to roll out fast, free WiFi and the in-flight experiences it powers, we’re able to serve customers travelling both domestically and internationally in new, in-the-moment ways.’, as per Travel News.

Delta’s international expansion of its free WiFi service reflects its broader commitment to enhancing the travel experience. Passengers flying from the United States to South Africa will soon enjoy complimentary in-flight WiFi, connecting them to the digital world throughout their journey.

However, according to Travel News, Delta Airlines has advised that the timeline for this rollout on South African routes is dependent on the aircraft installation schedule. The airline cautioned that during the WiFi transition period, some coverage gaps might be experienced due to the current positioning of satellites. Until additional satellites are in place, and aircraft are upgraded with the new satellite WiFi, some flights will continue to offer a paid WiFi experience via Intelsat.

Delta Air Lines currently operates ten weekly direct flights between the United States and South Africa, serving both Johannesburg and Cape Town. This free WiFi service, once fully implemented, is expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience on these routes, keeping travellers connected throughout their long-haul flights.

By mid-2025, travellers on Delta’s South African routes can look forward to a new era of in-flight connectivity, making their journey not just about reaching a destination, but staying connected all the way there.
