Major US airlines, Delta and United have both been allocated flights to South Africa after the two battled over the last remaining flight frequencies as part of the US- South Africa Air Transport Agreement.
United Airlines went as far as to submit a supplement to its original application, arguing that non-stop flights between Washington and Cape Town would benefit both countries and that Delta Airlines’ application should be considered the ‘lowest priority’.
After a series of applications, The US Department of Transportation came up with a solution; it asked South Africa to authorise more flights, which the South African government agreed upon.
The US became South Africa’s dominant tourist market in 2021, overtaking the UK which tends to account for 60% of South Africa’s international visitors.
