A staffing shortage at Heathrow Airport has culminated in a set of circumstances that has been called ‘airmageddon,’ according to CNN.
A staffing shortage caused a service meltdown at the busy airport. Heathrow Airport authorities attempted to mitigate the effects of mass cancelled flights and lost luggage by advising airlines to limit passengers to 100 000 a day.
Delta Air Lines attempted to solve the lost luggage problem for its passengers travelling through Heathrow Airport by flying a plane from London to Detroit with no passengers, only 1 000 pieces of lost luggage.
‘Delta teams worked a creative solution to move delayed checked bags from London-Heathrow on July 11 after a regularly scheduled flight had to be canceled given airport passenger volume restrictions at Heathrow. Delta flight 9888 from Heathrow to Delta’s Detroit hub flew 1,000 bags back to the United States, where teams then forwarded the bags on to our customers,’ the airline stated.
