Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay closed after 4 stranded whales euthanised

Posted on 21 December 2022 By David Henning

Four pygmy sperm whales washed ashore on Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay early on Tuesday Morning, 20 December, with the beach being closed until further notice.

Provisional reports revealed that four three adults and one juvenile were stranded. Mossel Bay Municipality’s environmental team closed the beach as increased shark activity could be expected in the area.

All four whales unfortunately died – two dying from natural causes due to the stress and the other two having to be euthanised.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment are to do a necropsy on the animals to determine a possible cause of the stranding.
