Documents needed for special international travel

Posted on 12 June 2020

The Department of Home Affairs has released more detailed instructions for South Africans who have been granted special permission to fly out of the country while our boarders are still closed.

The Department has already said that under certain circumstances, citizens who need to return to other countries may do so during these lower stages of lockdown.

These include those who are returning to their work outside of the country or returning to study.

According to the newly gazetted rules, the following documents must be presented to the Department of Home Affairs at least five working days before the intended date of travel.

– A copy of the passengers South African passport

– A letter of confirmation of admissibility or the validity of the visa or permit, issued by the relevant diplomatic or consular mission or authority of the receiving country

– Where transiting through another country, proof of permission to transit through such country

– Proof of the means of travel and the intended date of departure

As per earlier rules, those who wish to return to South Africa from overseas can do so. However, they will still be required to go through the screening and examination process.
