Dolphins at a Queensland restaurant and dolphin feeding attraction in Australia, have been bringing gifts from the ocean to presumably entice visitors who have not been around during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The humpback dolphin pod who are regularly fed at this spot, have been bringing deep sea gifts to the restaurant owners, according to their Facebook page.
‘The pod has been bringing us regular gifts, showing us how much they’re missing the public interaction and attention,’ Barnacles Cafe & Dolphin Feeding said in the post.
These gifts include barnacles, old bottles and pieces of coral.
‘One male dolphin brings in objects on his rostrum, or beak, and then he carefully presents them to us,’ Lyn McPherson, a volunteer at the café, told ABC News. ‘What we have to do is give him a fish in return.’
While this may appear sweet and it is easy to project human emotions onto animals, it is unlikely the true reason they are bringing gifts to the feeding spot.
‘Nothing surprises me with dolphins and their behaviour anymore,’ Barry McGovern University of Queensland doctorate student and dolphin expert told 7NEWS. ‘In all likelihood, they probably don’t miss humans per se. They probably miss a free meal and the routine.’
