The eThekwini Municipality has welcomed the reopening of the iconic Hilton Hotel Durban after its closing in 2021.
According to The South African, the hotel was affected by the coronavirus pandemic and was forced to close its doors due to an inability to finance its operations.
The five-star hotel had been operating since 1997 before its closure three years ago. The protracted closure of the establishment meant huge losses for the property, and the city itself.
“The hotel’s re-opening will also be adding to the luxury executive accommodation inventory of the City of Durban and will significantly benefit the City’s tourism economy as we mark the start of Tourism Month celebrated annually in September to promote domestic travel,” said the City.
eThekwini Municipality mayor, Cyril Xaba, expressed that the hotel’s phased reopening will strategically amplify the City’s business case when bidding to host national and international conferences.
It would also contribute immensely to job creation. Moreover, it forms part of Durban’s inner-city regeneration efforts.
