Electric thunderstorm lights up Newcastle

Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal experienced a magnificent thunderstorm on Monday, November 23 and a lucky photographer managed to capture it on film.

A Yellow 2 Weather Warning was issued for parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape and the Free State for Monday. However, KwaZulu-Natal saw the sky light up instead.

Last week, Pietermaritzburg was battered by a hailstorm in unusually severe weather.

Angus Burns Photography captured a lightning show in Newcastle that was reminiscent of scenes from Frankenstein.

‘Mother nature saved the best for last this evening… I heard the familiar rumbling of thunder in the distance at around 22h35 and noticed the flashes that accompanied it were abnormally bright…. so I quickly ventured up the hill to a different vantage point overlooking Newcastle and was treated to some of the most incredible lightning I’ve ever seen,’ Burns said.

‘In total I captured 11 x 30 second shots before the heavy rain arrived making it impossible for me to continue. Here are a series of different combinations of the lightning eventually culminating in a full stack of all 11 images (total 5 and 1/2 minutes of lightning). All captured from Signal Hill in Newcastle KZN with a Canon 5D Mark IV,’ Burns concluded.
