Emergency teams were dispatched to local communities in Durban to open halls and allow displaced families somewhere to sleep. They were also able to collect blankets, mattresses and food after the tornado and heavy rains caused havoc in and around their homes.

Heavy rains continued throughout parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday evening, 27 June, including Verulam and Phoenix.
Search and Rescue teams have helped families trapped due to flooding. ‘In addition, roving teams are removing obstructions on roads and clearing fallen trees and other debris,’ the City said. ‘A clinic is flooded and water pipes are damaged.’
Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda, and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube are expected to visit the Inanda community today, 28 June, and asses the damage. They will also ensure that affected families recieve adequate support.
Reaction Unit SA spokesperson Prem Balram says that they responded to more than 40 emergency calls from 4pm yesterday. ‘One person is presumed to have drowned in Zwelisha while attempting to traverse a flooded river. Due to the inclement weather, the search for his body was aborted.’
