The change in season marks the return of one of nature’s most spectacular marine events—the Sardine Run—making winter an exciting time on the KZN South Coast. This annual migration of billions of shimmering sardines along the coastline attracts a frenzy of marine life, making it a must-see for visitors.

Dr. Ryan Daly, Marine Scientist at the Oceanographic Research Institute, expressed optimism for another successful Sardine Run: “We have had relatively good runs over the past few years and I expect this coming year to be the same. Many factors can influence the timing and size of the run, but we will be monitoring closely and keeping visitors updated.”
Tourism officials are gearing up for an influx of visitors eager to witness the event. Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), highlighted the region’s unique offerings: ‘Our Blue Flag beaches and subtropical climate make the KZN South Coast a fantastic getaway year-round, and the Sardine Run makes winter even more special. Now’s the time to plan your trip!’
The Sardine Run is an unforgettable experience. From breathtaking marine encounters to prime photography opportunities and fresh seafood, visitors can enjoy the spectacle from boats, viewing decks, ocean-facing restaurants, or even the skies.
